2023 CSA Newsletter #6
As we continue to move along through the month, our summer crops in the greenhouse and hoophouses are really starting to take off. The greenhouse is looking especially lush at the moment. The hot peppers are starting to flourish, and flowers and fruit are starting to pop on all the varieties. Last week, most of the varieties were trellised, but in a slightly different manner that how we trellis the tomatoes. The hot peppers are grown in pots on top of the benches that we have. Instead of supporting each individual plant, we support a row of pots through a method called the "basket weave". There are two stakes on opposite sides of the bench, and we create a basket by having string offset on both sides of the pepper plants. The tomatoes are really enjoying themselves, as well. It won't be long for the cherry tomatoes. We've picked about 3 pints in the last week and a half. There may even be some tasters for you at tomorrow's pickup. We also began tying up the hoophouse peppers and eggplant to give them extra support throughout the remainder of the season. Fruit is forming throughout the houses and it's hard not to get excited.
This week's CSA share is going to have green tomatoes for the first time. We harvest green tomatoes early in tomato season to help speed up the ripening process. We want the fruit clusters to have a maximum of three tomatoes. Thinning the crop is another way that we try and manipulate the plant. I know fried green tomatoes are a go-to recipe but if you are feeling adventurous, you should try a green tomato chutney recipe. It's a sleeper hit, especially with good crackers and a soft cheese. There will even be some of the first hot peppers of the season if you want to spice it up a little. Additionally, there will be lettuce mix, fresh garlic, basil, chard, black currants (with the possibility of some jostaberries to taste), a carrot/turnip medley in the share.
Have a great week!
