Peer Educators

The Peer Educator Program provides a certificate through the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) to the current Peer Educators that serve as Mentors to our Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) and Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) Program.  They will work closely with the first-year students, and particularly students from diverse backgrounds at Tompkins Cortland. They are knowledgeable, caring and able to function in a variety of roles including peer mentor, tutor, event assistant, team member, and role model. 

The Peer Educator Program was formed in Fall 2021 and was designed to offer specialized training and experience guiding the Peer Educators to become valuable leaders among their peers and earn leadership recognition. This program offers Levels 1, 2, and 3 certification in peer educator training (International Peer Educator Training Program Certification, or IPTPC). 

Level 1    

(15 hours of Peer Educator training)    
(50 hours of peer educating experience)

  • Programming Part 2/Train the Trainor - Ice Breakers
  • Team Building
  • Conferencing Skills

Level 2   

(Level 1 Certification plus 10 additional hours of training to total 25 hours) 
(Level I Certification (50 Minimum) plus experience to total 75 accumulated hours)

Level 3  

(Level II Certification plus 10 additional hours to total 35 hours) 
(Total of 100 Hours including Level I and II requirements (75 hours minimum plus experience to total 100 accumulated hours)

Eligibility 

*Must have a 2.3 GPA or higher 
*Must be enrolled in at least 2nd semester at Tompkins Cortland
