Tompkins Cortland Community College student Haichuan Gu has won the annual statewide Math League competition of the New York State Mathematics Association of Two-Year Colleges (NYSMATYC). Gu was also part of the TC3 team that finished second in the state. A total of 16 TC3 students took part in the competition, which had teams from more than 20 SUNY and CUNY two-year colleges.

Each year, NYSMATYC holds math league competitions in the fall and spring, with the scores combined to determine the winning individuals and teams. Each timed exam consists of approximately twenty questions, and is held on the respective campuses. The test covers algebra, geometry, pre-calculus, and logic.

TC3 has participate in the Math League since 2012-13 academic year, and this is first time the College has had an individual champion. Gu, a first-year liberal arts and sciences: general studies major, said the team met regularly to go over past test questions. Mathematics Professor Sophia Georgiakaki also provided timed practice tests. Gu said the results were gratifying. “It is an acknowledgement of our efforts and an encouragement to me to challenge myself with more difficult math,” said Gu.

For the 2023-24 academic year, the TC3 team finished second in the state, behind only the Borough of Manhattan Community College.
