Alumni Profile: Kansas Underwood '04
My whole experience at TC3 was fantastic. I had excellent and supportive instructors, both during non-nursing classes and nursing courses. I felt so prepared and supported.
Twenty years ago, Kansas Mead completed the rigorous TC3 nursing program, earning an A.A.S. degree and embarking on a nursing career journey that has seen her rise to the executive level. Kansas Mead is now Kansas Underwood, and she credits the education she received at TC3 with laying the foundation that helped her grow into her various roles as a healthcare provider, mentor, and executive. For the last two decades, she has been making a real difference in the community.
Why did you choose to attend Tompkins Cortland? I chose Tompkins Cortland for a number of reasons. The location, being that it was close to home, was valuable to me. I felt that the cost was reasonable for such a strong program. Lastly, and probably the most important reason, was reputation. TC3 had, and still has, an excellent reputation for producing strong and competent nurses, with high success rates.
What has been your career journey, and how did your time at TC3 impact your path? TC3 laid the foundation for me and truly set me on a successful path. I am sincerely thankful for the support I was always provided.
I started my career journey at age 23 after graduating from the nursing program at TC3. I worked in the emergency department at a local hospital. I then went on to become an emergency department traveling nurse and completed my BSN at SUNY Upstate Medical University. In 2012 I stepped into a leadership role at Cayuga Medical Center in a surgical unit, and over the next few years I progressed to a Director, Senior Director, and then Assistant Chief Nursing Officer. Two years ago, I joined Guthrie Cortland as the Chief Nursing Officer and Vice President of Operations. During all of this, I also completed my master's in management at Keuka College.
Who at TC3 had the greatest positive impact on your experience or your future? This is hard as there were so many individuals that influenced me, but within the nursing program, I think it would be Glenna (McMinn). She was such a positive light and support system.
What are some of your favorite memories from TC3? The friendships I made during the nursing program. I made some of the best friendships that I still have today. The study groups, we all helped each other be successful.
Knowing what you know now, what advice would you give to yourself (or anyone) when you started at TC3? I would tell my younger self so many things...
- Embrace Every Opportunity: Don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and explore all the opportunities TC3 has to offer. Whether it's joining clubs, participating in extracurricular activities, or taking on leadership roles, each experience will shape your personal and professional growth.
- Build Strong Relationships: Cultivate meaningful connections with professors, mentors, and peers. They can offer guidance, support, and invaluable advice as you navigate your academic and professional journey.
- Stay Organized and Prioritize: Balancing coursework, clinicals, and personal commitments can be challenging. Develop effective time management skills early on to stay organized and prioritize tasks effectively.
- Seek Help When Needed: Don't hesitate to reach out for help when you're struggling academically, emotionally, or personally. TC3 offers a wealth of resources, including tutoring services, counseling support, and academic advisors, to help you succeed.
- Stay Resilient: Nursing school can be demanding and challenging, but remember that every setback is an opportunity to learn and grow. Stay resilient in the face of adversity and believe in your ability to overcome obstacles.
- Take Care of Yourself: Amidst the demands of nursing school, don't forget to prioritize self-care. Make time for activities that bring you joy, practice mindfulness, and prioritize your physical and mental well-being.
- Stay Curious and Keep Learning: Nursing is a dynamic and ever-evolving field. Stay curious, keep up with the latest research and advancements, and never stop learning. I would tell her that life is a journey and we have bumps in the road, but the ride is what makes it all worthwhile
What does the TC3 nursing program mean to you? I am so proud to call myself a TC3 alumni. We have an amazing college right in our backyard and I feel so thankful.
