RSVP to Commencement

How do I get my cap and gown?

Good news: Your cap, gown and tassel are included in the student fees you already paid! Beginning May 1, students can stop by the Bookstore to pick up their regalia through to the day of the Commencement ceremony. There is no need to pre-order.

Questions? Contact the Bookstore at 607.844.6587, tc3@bkstr.com, or by just stopping in!

How many guests can I bring?

To ensure there are enough seats for all graduates to have their loved ones attend, we ask graduates to bring no more than five (5) guests.

Will the ceremony be livestreamed or recorded?

Yes, the ceremony will be both livestreamed and recorded for viewing. The link for the livestream will be on TC3 Commencement page and the recording will be posted on the College's YouTube page.

I plan to walk for Commencement, what time should I be at the gym?

To ensure ample time for lining up and organization, we suggest our graduates come to the field house at least 45 minutes before commencement begins (5:15 p.m.). This will allow any guests in attendance time to be seated in the gym prior to the start of the ceremony.

I will need special accommodations for commencement, who should I contact?

If you, or a guest needs accommodations for the ceremony, please let us know and email us at commencement@tompkinscortland.edu

When do I get my diploma?

Diplomas are not given out at commencement. They will be mailed to the graduate's permanent address in July.

How to Apply to Graduate

Step 1: Check Degree Works

Before applying to graduate, check your Degree Works worksheet. If any courses are marked as “Still Needed”, see your academic advisor for assistance. You will not be certified for graduation until all degree requirements are either complete or in progress.

Additional Graduation Requirements

  • A minimum of 15 academic credits in residency successfully completed at TC3. (These credits must be exclusive of experiential learning or proficiency credits.)
  • A cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or higher.
  • Up to three fitness credits may be applied toward unrestricted elective requirements in any degree program.
  • Settlement of all financial or other obligations to the College.

Graduating with Honors

To qualify for honors recognition at graduation, you must have completed at least 30 hours at TC3 meet the following requirements:

HonorificGPA Range
HonorGPA = 3.20 - 3.49
High HonorGPA = 3.80 - 4.00
Highest HonorGPA = 3.50 - 3.79

Multiple Degrees

To earn more than one degree or certificate at TC3, you must meet these conditions:

  • All required courses must be successfully completed for each degree or certificate program.
  • A minimum of 15 unique credits beyond those required for the first degree must be completed at TC3. Any courses applied to previously earned degrees cannot be counted as part of these additional 15 credits.
  • If the degrees are to be awarded simultaneously, you must submit a separate application for each degree for a $20 fee each.
  • If the degrees are not to be awarded simultaneously and enrollment is uninterrupted, submit an application for graduation for the first degree only. Then, at the beginning of the next semester, submit a program change form to the office of Student Success: Advising, Career & Transfer. They will help you officially change from your first degree program to the second degree program. A second application for graduation must be submitted for an additional fee of $20.
  • If the degrees are not to be awarded simultaneously and enrollment is interrupted, then you should reapply for admission to the college and indicate the second degree program on the application form. A second application for graduation must also be filed along with the $20 fee.

Note: Multiple degrees will only be awarded for individual degree programs. A student may not receive an additional degree in a degree’s concentration, sequence, or option.

Step 2: File Applicable Course Paperwork

If applicable, all course substitutions, waivers, grade changes, transfer credits, or other documents related to completion of degree requirements must be completed or in process before applying to graduate.

You must submit a final high school transcript documenting graduation or a high school equivalency diploma (GED) prior to receiving your degree.

Step 3: Apply to Graduate (Required to Receive Degree)
  • You must apply for graduation during the semester before you complete your program. For example, if you plan to graduate in May, you must submit your graduation application by the deadline in the fall semester.
  • Applying to graduate is required even if you do not intend to participate in the commencement ceremony. Please note that you must be matriculated in a degree program for your application to be accepted.
  • After you submit your application to graduate, the Office of Academic Records will begin a review of degree progress.
  • You can check the status of your graduation application and degree audit in Degree Works, or on the "Apply to Graduate" link in Self Service. A letter will be sent to you once the official degree audit has been completed by the office of Academic Records.
  • Important: Graduation is not automatic upon degree completion. Every potential graduate must apply to graduate.

Step 4: Prepare for Commencement

TC3’s commencement ceremonies are a public celebration of graduation. Students do not receive an official diploma at the ceremonies. The official degree is awarded and posted to transcripts upon final verification that all degree requirements have been completed, within four weeks of the end of the semester. Diplomas are issued approximately six weeks after the end of the semester.

August and December graduates are included in the following May’s Commencement ceremony. There is no August ceremony. December graduates may attend both the December recognition ceremony and the May Commencement ceremony.

No Additional Fees to Graduate

There is no additional charge involved with graduation or commencement. The matriculation fee is applied to the bill the first semester you enroll in classes. This fee covers graduation and commencement expenses. The exception is that there is an additional matriculation fee of $20 for completing a second degree.

Financial Holds do not Prevent Graduation

A financial hold on your account does not prevent graduation. You should still apply to graduate. You will be able to participate in commencement and your degree will be granted (if degree requirements are complete). However, neither the diploma nor official transcripts will be released until the hold is cleared. You must notify the office of Academic Records when the hold is cleared.

Contact acadrec@tc3.edu with any questions.

December Graduate Recognition Ceremony

The College holds two ceremonies each year to honor graduating students. The December Graduates Recognition Ceremony is an opportunity to pay tribute to those completing their degrees after the fall semester. The December ceremony is smaller and less formal (no regalia is worn) than Commencement in May, but it is still full of excitement and pride in the accomplishments of our students and their families. Students that graduate in December are invited to come back and participate in the May Commencement Ceremony.
