Academic Advisor's Roles and Responsibilities
An Academic Advisor can help students:
- Understand how degree programs can help meet your career/academic goals
- Identify program requirements and plan appropriate course schedules
- Make changes to class schedules
- Explore career/transfer plans and their relationship to program/courses
- Connect with appropriate campus resources (e.g., Baker Commons)
Advising is a two-way street, both the student and the advisor have responsibilities in the process.
Student Responsibilities
- Understand program information (requirements, courses)
- Learn to use DegreeWorks
- Obtain necessary signatures on College forms (Change of Schedule, Registration Form, etc.)
- Submit appropriate forms for processing to the Enrollment Services Center (room 101)
- Meet important dates and deadlines
- Obtain authorization for online registration from advisors
- Understand College resources and seek them out when needed
- Discuss career and transfer plans
- Read academic policies
- Check myMAIL account regularly
- Keep contact information updated in myINFO
- Ask questions
Advisor Responsibilities
- Be available to meet with students during office hours and by appointment
- Provide direction for program progress toward the student’s career and educational goals
- Provide relevant, current academic information
- Refer students who may need assistance solving academic or personal problems
