A Tompkins Cortland Community College student club has raised more than $1,200 for the hurricane relief efforts in Puerto Rico. Students Take Action and Negotiate Dialogue, or S.T.A.N.D., took up the collection on campus during the week of October 16-20. The money is being used to purchase and ship supplies to Caguas, Puerto Rico, a city of 142,000 people that was devastated by Hurricane Maria last month.

Members of the student club collected donations in the cafeteria, as well as through drop-off points on campus. On Friday, October 20, the club was able to package and ship supplies including water treatment tablets and filters to accommodate nearly two million gallons of water, mosquito repellent, bandages, adult and child pain relievers, personal hygiene products, diapers and baby wipes. More supplies were ordered online and shipped directly to the club’s contact in Caguas.

S.T.A.N.D. was formed in February 2017 as way to help increase student awareness of political dialogue and civic responsibility and to take meaningful action in those areas. It was officially recognized as a student club at Tompkins Cortland in August and has about two dozen members.
